This study details a rare brain and kidney echinococcal disease case. Surgical intervention for brain cysts and partial nephrectomy for kidney cysts led to a full recovery, with the patient remaining disease-free for 8 years.
Area of Science:
- Medicine
- Parasitology
- Neurology
Background:
- Echinococcal disease, caused by tapeworms, typically affects the liver and lungs.
- Multiple or atypical presentations of echinococcosis can pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report an unusual case of echinococcal disease involving the brain and kidney.
- To highlight the diagnostic and management strategies for rare presentations of echinococcosis.
Main Methods:
- Surgical excision of the intracerebral lesion.
- Identification and treatment of renal echinococcal cysts via partial nephrectomy.
Main Results:
- A patient presented with multiple intracerebral echinococcal lesions causing epileptic convulsions.
- The liver and lungs were spared, which is atypical for echinococcal disease.
- Renal echinococcal cysts were subsequently identified and treated successfully.
Conclusions:
- Echinococcal disease can present with unusual patterns, including cerebral and renal involvement with sparing of typical organs.
- Multidisciplinary surgical approaches are effective for managing complex echinococcal disease.
- Long-term follow-up confirmed a favorable outcome after surgical treatment.
