  • Moderate alcohol consumption is often linked to improved cognitive function and reduced dementia risk in older adults.
  • However, alcohol's neurotoxic effects necessitate further investigation through well-controlled population studies.
  • The relationship between alcohol intake and cognitive decline in aging populations requires clarification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between self-reported alcohol intake at age 70 and cognitive function in healthy elderly men.
  • To assess both cross-sectional and prospective links between alcohol consumption and cognitive performance.
  • To determine if moderate alcohol intake influences the rate of cognitive aging.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based cohort of 652 cognitively healthy elderly men was studied.
  • Cognitive function was assessed using Trail Making Tests (TMTs) A and B.
  • Linear regression models analyzed associations, adjusting for numerous covariates including lifestyle, health status, and genetics.

Main Results:

  • Self-reported alcohol intake at age 70 was associated with better performance on TMT-B at ages 70 and 77.
  • Alcohol intake did not predict changes in cognitive performance between ages 70 and 77.
  • No prospective association was found between moderate alcohol consumption and slowed cognitive aging.

Conclusions:

  • While cross-sectional data suggest a link between moderate alcohol intake and better executive function, it does not slow cognitive aging.
  • The findings do not support recommending daily moderate alcohol consumption as a strategy to mitigate cognitive decline in the elderly.
  • Further research is needed to fully understand alcohol's complex effects on cognitive health in aging populations.
