Public awareness of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is low, with many unable to identify the condition despite recognizing the need for professional help. Improving mental health literacy (MHL) is crucial for effective OCD treatment.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Public Health
- Mental Health Literacy
Background:
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a significant cause of disability, yet often remains unrecognized and untreated.
- Poor mental health literacy (MHL) may hinder individuals from seeking necessary treatment for OCD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess public knowledge and beliefs about OCD.
- To examine factors influencing MHL regarding OCD.
Main Methods:
- A telephone survey of 577 US adults was conducted.
- Participants' MHL for OCD was assessed after hearing a descriptive vignette, focusing on recognition, help-seeking beliefs, and concerns about stigma.
Main Results:
- Most participants recognized the need for professional help (90.9%) but only one-third correctly identified OCD.
- Primary care physicians were the most commonly cited source for help.
- Lower education, income, and older age correlated with poorer OCD recognition.
Conclusions:
- Community members often recognize the need for help for OCD symptoms but struggle with disorder recognition.
- Enhancing public knowledge of OCD and its treatment options is essential.
