Background:

  • Articulatory diadochokinesis (ADK) tests like alternating motion rate (AMR) and sequential motion rate (SMR) are crucial for evaluating motor speech disorders.
  • Existing normative data for ADK in adults aged 65 and older is lacking, hindering accurate clinical assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a representative normative dataset for AMR and SMR in adults aged 65 years and older.
  • To investigate the influence of age and gender on these speech motor rates in the elderly population.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-six healthy adults (65-86 years) were audio-recorded performing AMR (/pa/, /ta/, /ka/) and SMR (/pataka/) tasks.
  • Acoustic analysis software measured the rate of the first nine syllables for each task.
  • Generalized linear models were used to examine age and gender effects, including rate variability.

Main Results:

  • Normative data for AMR and SMR were successfully obtained for both age groups and genders.
  • No significant effect of age on speech rates was observed.
  • Males exhibited significantly higher AMR than females for /pa/, /ta/, and /ka/ tasks, but no gender difference was found for SMR.
