Immunodeficiency Diseases

Immunodeficiency disorders are conditions in which the immune system's ability to fight infectious disease and cancer is compromised or entirely absent. The immune system comprises a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body from potentially harmful invaders. Summary

Patients with Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) show elevated levels of soluble CD26 (sCD26) and CD30 (sCD30), indicating a T(H)1-polarized immune response. These markers may serve as prognostic tools for CVID disease severity.

Background:

  • Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) is characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia and recurrent infections.
  • A shift towards a T(H)1-type immune response is increasingly recognized in CVID patients.
  • Soluble CD26 (sCD26) and CD30 (sCD30) are investigated as potential markers of immune dysregulation in CVID.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure serum levels of soluble CD26 (sCD26) and CD30 (sCD30) in patients with CVID.
  • To assess the correlation of these markers with immune response polarization and clinical disease severity.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 25 CVID patients and 20 healthy controls were analyzed.
  • Serum levels of sCD26 and sCD30 were quantified using a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Main Results:

  • Patients with CVID exhibited significantly higher serum levels of both sCD26 and sCD30 compared to controls.
  • Elevated sCD30 levels were associated with splenomegaly and malignancy in CVID patients.
  • No significant association was found between sCD30 levels and bronchiectasis or autoimmunity.

Conclusions:

  • Increased serum sCD26 and sCD30 levels in CVID suggest a T(H)1-polarized immune response.
  • These soluble markers show potential as prognostic tools for assessing CVID disease severity and outcomes.
