Treatment for low-functioning sex offenders: group therapy and interagency coordination

Possible historical reasons for the lack of specialized therapy for sex offenders who are mentally retarded or in the borderline-normal range of intelligence were reviewed. The resulting inconsistent and often abusive responses of society to such sexual offenders were emphasized. Current treatment approaches for sex offenders were discussed as an introduction to a relatively nonintrusive, group-based therapy system for offenders with IQs from 55 to 85. Rates of goal attainment and recidivism were presented.
