  • Identifying specific health information technology (HIT) incidents within this large dataset is crucial for patient safety but challenging due to manual review limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of employing statistical text classification for automated identification of HIT incidents within the FDA MAUDE database.
  • To evaluate the performance of text classifiers in distinguishing HIT incidents from other device-related events.

Main Methods:

  • A subset of MAUDE data (570,272 incidents) from 2008-2010, including 1,534 HIT incidents, was used.
  • Regularized logistic regression models were trained and tested on both balanced and stratified datasets.
  • Feature engineering techniques, including stemming, lemmatization, and stop word removal, were explored to optimize classification.
