Summary

Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis demonstrates superior effectiveness compared to open procedures, reducing blood loss and hospital stays. While initial fusion rates were higher arthroscopically, both methods achieved comparable long-term bony union and improved patient function.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures
  • Ankle Arthrodesis

Background:

  • Ankle arthrodesis is a surgical procedure to fuse the ankle joint.
  • Both open and arthroscopic techniques are utilized for ankle fusion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical effectiveness of arthroscopic versus open ankle arthrodesis.
  • Evaluate differences in operative time, blood loss, and patient outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 30 patients undergoing unilateral ankle arthrodesis.
  • 14 patients in the arthroscopic group, 16 in the open group.
  • Comparison of operative time, blood loss, AOFAS scores, and bony union rates.

Autologous Microfractured and Purified Adipose Tissue for Arthroscopic Management of Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus

Published on: January 23, 2018

  • Arthroscopic surgery had longer operation times but less blood loss and shorter hospital stays.
  • Bony fusion rates at 3 months were significantly higher in the arthroscopic group (92.86%) versus open (62.50%).
  • At 12 months, both groups showed comparable bony union (100% vs. 93.75%) and improved AOFAS scores, with arthroscopic showing higher scores at 6 and 12 months.

Conclusions:

  • Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis offers better overall effectiveness than open arthrodesis.
  • The arthroscopic approach reduces intraoperative blood loss and hospitalization duration.
  • Both methods lead to improved functional outcomes, with arthroscopic potentially offering faster functional recovery.
