Background:

Prior research indicates non-artists place agents on the left and patients on the right when drawing.
This spatial bias in depiction is observed in healthy individuals not trained as artists.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate if artists exhibit a similar left-agent, right-patient spatial bias in religious art.
Specifically examining the Annunciation scene, with the angel Gabriel as the agent and the Virgin Mary as the patient.

Main Methods:

Analysis of 604 Annunciation paintings by various artists.
Quantitative assessment of the spatial positioning of the angel Gabriel relative to the Virgin Mary.

Main Results:

The angel Gabriel (agent) was significantly more frequently depicted to the left of the Virgin Mary (patient).
This finding supports the left-agent, right-patient hypothesis in artistic representations.

Conclusions:
