Summary

Misrepresentation of publications in pediatric surgery fellowship applications is low, but authorship claims warrant verification. A review of applications found that the number of publications and first-author publications correlated with misrepresentation.

Background:

Pediatric surgery fellowship is highly competitive, making publications and first authorship critical for successful matching.
This study investigated the rate of authorship misrepresentation in fellowship applications.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) applications for pediatric surgery fellowships to verify authorship claims.
To determine the incidence and characteristics of publication misrepresentation.

Main Methods:

Reviewed bibliographies of 147 pediatric surgery fellowship applications (2007-2009).
Verified peer-reviewed journal articles using Medline searches and journal websites.
Consulted a medical librarian for unidentified articles.

Analyzed differences between misrepresented and accurate applications.

Main Results:

17.6% of applicants (24/136) showed evidence of misrepresentation, with 4.3% of manuscripts having discrepancies.
Published manuscripts were verified 96.7% of the time; "in press" manuscripts had a verification rate of 88.3%.
Higher numbers of total publications and first-author publications correlated significantly with misrepresentation (P=0.026 and P=0.037, respectively).

Conclusions:

The incidence of citation misrepresentation in pediatric surgery fellowship applications is low.
Despite the low rate, verification of authorship claims is recommended.
