Background:

Web-based distance learning offers a flexible alternative to traditional nursing education.
A systematic review was needed to evaluate its effectiveness in nursing programs.
Previous research lacked a comprehensive analysis of web-based education's impact on nurses.

Purpose of the Study:

To systematically review the efficacy of web-based distance education for nursing students.
To assess the impact on employed nurses' knowledge and skills.
To evaluate participant satisfaction and self-efficacy.

Main Methods:

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted.
Searches were performed in PubMed and Embase up to July 2012.
Two independent reviewers selected studies, appraised quality, and extracted data.

Main Results:

Nine RCTs (five A-quality, four B-quality) were included.
Web-based learning demonstrated equivalent or superior knowledge acquisition.
Positive effects on nursing skills were observed in most studies, alongside high satisfaction rates and enhanced self-efficacy.

Conclusions:

Web-based education is effective for improving nursing knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy.
Participants reported high satisfaction with web-based learning modalities.
More high-quality experimental studies are needed to solidify these conclusions.
