Background:

  • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and keratoacanthoma (KA) are epithelial skin neoplasms.
  • Distinguishing between SCC and KA histologically can be challenging.
  • Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) may play a role in their pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare TGF-alpha expression patterns in SCC and KA.
  • To determine if TGF-alpha expression can aid in differentiating these two skin neoplasms.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis of 40 skin tumor specimens (20 SCC, 20 KA).
  • Evaluation of TGF-alpha staining patterns (diffuse vs. patchy, peripheral staining).

Main Results:

  • Significant differences in TGF-alpha staining patterns were observed between KA and SCC.
  • KAs showed predominantly diffuse TGF-alpha staining (90%) without peripheral staining (60%).
  • SCCs exhibited mostly patchy staining (55%) with peripheral staining in 1-2 cell layers (100%).

Conclusions:

  • TGF-alpha staining patterns differ significantly between KA and SCC.
  • Immunohistochemical analysis of TGF-alpha expression can serve as a valuable tool to aid in the differentiation of these closely related skin neoplasms in clinical practice.
