The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Context:

  • Traditional thyroidectomy can result in visible neck scarring.
  • Endoscopic techniques offer potential cosmetic and patient comfort benefits.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the clinical utility and outcomes of endoscopic thyroid lobectomy using a subclavicular approach.
  • To document surgical experiences and assess the safety and efficacy of this minimally invasive technique.

Summary:

  • Thirty-five patients underwent endoscopic thyroid lobectomy via the subclavicular route.
  • The procedure utilized automatic retractors, suction dissectors, and harmonic scalpels, with the inferior thyroid artery guiding recurrent laryngeal nerve identification.
  • All procedures were successful, with 33 cases diagnosed as goiter and 2 as papillary thyroid carcinoma intraoperatively.

Impact:

  • The subclavicular endoscopic thyroid lobectomy is a safe and effective procedure for benign thyroid conditions.
  • It provides significant advantages including minimal invasion, high safety, ease of manipulation, and superior cosmetic outcomes.
  • This technique is recommended for broader clinical application due to its favorable results and patient satisfaction.
