Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the short-term clinical and microbiological effects of patient-applied subgingival root brushing.
  • To assess the efficacy of subgingival root brushing as an adjunctive therapy in untreated deep periodontal pockets.

Main Methods:

  • 11 adults with untreated chronic periodontitis were enrolled.
  • Two contralateral deep periodontal sites (≥6 mm) per patient were selected.
  • One site received daily subgingival root brushing for 14 days; the other served as a control.

Main Results:

  • Subgingival root brushing significantly reduced plaque, bleeding on probing, and probing depth (mean 1.8 mm).
  • Total cultivable subgingival bacteria and proportions of key periodontal pathogens decreased dramatically.
  • Control sites showed no significant clinical or microbiological changes.

  • Patient-applied subgingival root brushing effectively improves clinical and microbiological parameters in deep periodontal pockets.
