Summary

A diet rich in vegetables and fish may support kidney function in adults with type 2 diabetes. This dietary pattern was associated with lower creatinine and improved estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

Background:

  • Dietary patterns are associated with chronic disease risks.
  • Limited research exists on dietary patterns and kidney function in Asian adults with type 2 diabetes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between dietary patterns and kidney function indicators in adult type 2 diabetes patients in Taiwan.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 635 diabetic patients in Taiwan was analyzed.
  • Factor analysis identified three dietary patterns: high fat, vegetable and fish, and traditional Chinese-snack.
  • Kidney function was assessed using urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR), creatinine, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

Main Results:

  • The vegetable and fish dietary pattern showed a significant dose-response correlation with decreased creatinine and marginally increased eGFR.
  • The traditional Chinese-snack dietary pattern had a marginal association with creatinine and eGFR.
  • High fat dietary patterns were not correlated with any kidney function indicators.

Conclusions:

  • Frequent intake of fish and vegetables may be linked to better kidney function indicators in type 2 diabetes.
  • Further research with larger sample sizes and sensitive renal function indicators is recommended to confirm these findings.
