  • To investigate if nocebo effects can be induced through observational learning.
  • To determine if pain anxiety or pain catastrophizing influence nocebo responses.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty-five female students were assigned to control, verbal suggestion, or observational learning conditions.
  • Participants received pressure pain stimuli with or without an applied ointment.
  • Pain ratings and pain-related attitudes were assessed via questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • Observational learning significantly increased pain ratings when the ointment was applied.
  • Verbal suggestion also increased pain ratings compared to controls.
  • Nocebo response correlated with pain catastrophizing.

Conclusions:

  • Observational learning can induce nocebo hyperalgesia for pressure pain.
  • Verbal suggestion also induced nocebo effects, but observational learning was more effective.
  • Pain catastrophizing, not pain anxiety, predicted the nocebo response.
