Aortic root motion is reduced in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). This finding in right ventricular dysfunction may impact left atrial function and filling patterns.

- 20 CTEPH patients and 10 controls were studied.
- M-mode echocardiography measured anterior aortic root excursion.
- Excursion defined as maximal minus minimal anterior distance of the aortic root's posterior wall.

- CTEPH patients showed significantly reduced aortic excursion (0.66 cm) compared to controls (1.16 cm).
- A significant inverse linear correlation was found between mean pulmonary artery pressure and aortic excursion in CTEPH patients (r = 0.66, P = 0.001).
Conclusions:
- Aortic root excursion is diminished in CTEPH due to right ventricular pressure overload.
- Impaired aortic root motion may affect left atrial systolic expansion and diastolic filling in CTEPH.
