Summary

Solitary epidermolytic acanthoma is more common than previously thought, frequently occurring on genital skin, particularly in males. Human papillomavirus (HPV) was not found to be associated with these lesions.

Background:

  • Solitary epidermolytic acanthoma (SEA) is an uncommon skin lesion.
  • SEA can manifest as localized or disseminated lesions, distinct from genetic ichthyosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence and characteristics of SEA.
  • To investigate the potential role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in genital SEA.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 64 SEA biopsies from 60 individuals.
  • Clinical and histopathological features were analyzed.
  • In situ hybridization for HPV was performed on genital lesions.

Main Results:

  • SEA incidence was higher than previously reported (27.8/100,000).
  • Genital location was most common (8/100,000 incidence).
  • No genital HPV types were detected in genital lesions.

Conclusions:

  • Genital skin is the most common site for SEA.
  • No association found between genital SEA and genital HPV types.
  • SEA shows male predominance and diverse clinical/pathological findings.
