Summary

Betamethasone (12mg) reduced post-operative pain in inguinal hernia surgery patients within 24 hours and at one month. However, it may increase bleeding risk when combined with diclofenac.

Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Post-operative pain and nausea are common complications in day-case surgery.
  • Inguinal hernia surgery often involves significant post-operative discomfort.
  • Effective pain management strategies are crucial for patient recovery and satisfaction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of betamethasone in managing pain and nausea after open inguinal hernia surgery.
  • To compare the outcomes of betamethasone treatment versus placebo in this patient population.
  • To assess the impact of betamethasone on pain at various post-operative time points.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 398 patients undergoing open inguinal hernia surgery.

Application of a New Mesh Fixation Method in Laparoscopic Incisional Hernia Repair

Published on: December 23, 2022

  • Patients received either 12mg of intravenous betamethasone or a placebo.
  • Pain was assessed using a visual analogue scale and the Inguinal Pain Questionnaire at multiple intervals up to one year post-surgery.
  • Main Results:

    • Betamethasone significantly reduced pain at rest on the day of surgery and 24 hours post-surgery.
    • A significant reduction in pain was observed one month post-surgery in the betamethasone group.
    • An increased risk of bleeding complications was noted in the betamethasone group (p=0.028).

    Conclusions:

    • A 12mg dose of betamethasone effectively reduces pain in the early post-operative period and at one month after inguinal hernia surgery.
    • The combination of betamethasone with diclofenac may elevate the risk of bleeding complications.
    • Further research is warranted to optimize the use of betamethasone in surgical pain management.
