Summary

A new clinical finding of decreased corneal sensitivity was observed in epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. Confocal microscopy helped evaluate these transient changes in corneal nerves and inflammation.

  • Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is a viral eye infection.
  • Corneal involvement is a common complication of EKC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and characterize decreased corneal sensitivity in EKC.
  • To utilize corneal confocal microscopy to assess associated microstructural changes.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 41 eyes from 28 patients with corneal infiltrates due to EKC.
  • Corneal sensitivity was measured, and confocal microscopy was performed.

Main Results:

  • Decreased corneal sensitivity was found in 74.3% of affected eyes.
  • Confocal microscopy revealed epithelial cell changes, inflammatory infiltrates, and altered corneal stroma and nerves.
