Summary

Tongue abscesses, though rare, pose a serious airway risk. This case highlights insect bites as a potential trigger, emphasizing prompt diagnosis and treatment for swollen tongue symptoms.

Background:

  • Tongue abscesses are uncommon but carry significant risks, including airway compromise.
  • Trauma is a frequent preceding factor in the development of tongue abscesses.

Observation:

  • A case of a healthy patient presenting with tongue edema, erythema, and pain eleven days post-trauma.
  • The trauma involved an insect, suspected to be a spider, in the oral cavity.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography (CT) confirmed the presence of a tongue abscess.
  • Successful treatment was achieved through incision and drainage, followed by antibiotic therapy.

Implications:

  • Tongue abscess should be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients with acute tongue swelling.
