Summary

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) strongly links to eyelid cancers, photokeratitis, pterygium, and cataracts. UV protection through eyewear and clothing is recommended to prevent these UVR-associated ocular diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the scientific literature on the association between UV light exposure and various ocular diseases.
  • To evaluate the strength of evidence for these associations and identify areas needing further research.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search of Medline was conducted up to November 2012.
  • Data were extracted and reviewed from original articles, review papers, and book chapters.

Main Results:

  • Strong evidence links UVR exposure to eyelid malignancies (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma), photokeratitis, climatic droplet keratopathy, pterygium, and cortical cataract.
