  • To investigate the frequency and nature of reduced upper limb function in patients with neck pain disorders.
  • To explore the relationship between neck pain severity and upper limb functional restrictions.

Main Methods:

  • A survey of 103 patients with neck pain disorders attending physiotherapy clinics.
  • Utilized Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), Neck Disability Index (NDI), Pictorial Fear of Activity Scale-Cervical (PFActS-C), and Patient Specific Functional Scale (PSFS) questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 80% of patients reported upper limb activities aggravated their neck pain, most commonly involving lifting.
  • Eight specific upper limb activities on the DASH questionnaire were reported as problematic by over 50% of participants.
  • A moderate-to-high correlation was found between neck pain severity (NDI) and upper limb functional restrictions (DASH).

Conclusions:

  • Upper limb function is frequently impaired in individuals with neck pain disorders.
  • Clinicians should routinely inquire about upper limb function in patients presenting with neck pain.
  • The DASH questionnaire may serve as a valuable outcome measure for assessing upper limb function in this population.
