Blinding

Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare within-team debriefing with instructor-led debriefing.
  • To assess the impact on team performance during simulated crises.

Main Methods:

  • 40 operating room teams (anesthesia trainee, surgical trainee, nurse) participated.
  • Teams underwent a simulated crisis (pretest), randomized to within-team or instructor-led debriefing, then a posttest crisis.
  • Performance was assessed using the Team Emergency Assessment Measure scale.

Main Results:

  • Team performance significantly improved from pretest to posttest (P = 0.008).
  • No significant difference in performance improvement was found between within-team and instructor-led debriefing (P = 0.52).

Conclusions:

  • Within-team debriefing leads to significant improvements in simulated crisis team performance.
  • It may be as effective as instructor-led debriefing.
  • This method enhances resource utilization and feasibility in team-based simulation.
