Background:

  • Day care centers (DCCs) are known settings for gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.
  • Adequate hand hygiene (HH) is crucial for preventing infection transmission in DCCs.
  • Previous research identified environmental and sociocognitive factors influencing caregiver HH compliance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and describe a cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating an intervention to improve HH compliance in DCCs.
  • To assess the effectiveness of the intervention in reducing infections among children attending DCCs.
  • To measure HH compliance in both caregivers and children.

Main Methods:

  • A two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial involving 71 DCCs in the Netherlands.
  • Intervention group received HH products, training on national guidelines, team sessions, and reminders.
  • Control group continued usual practice; primary outcome was observed HH compliance, secondary was infection incidence.
