Cystoid macular edema: a postoperative complication
Abstract:
Cystoid macular edema (CME) is a condition of the macula characterized by an accumulation of fluid in the outer plexiform layer of Henle, causing edema and cyst-like formations. The major presenting symptom of visually significant CME is a decrease in visual acuity; a fundus examination may or may not reveal the presence of CME. Fluorescein angiography is used to confirm the presence of suspected CME. Most cases of CME improve after a course of indomethacin; but the patient must continue to be followed because CME can recur after withdrawal of the medication.
