Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention01:26

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...
Observational Studies01:11

Observational Studies

Observational studies are a type of analytical study where researchers observe events without any interventions. In other words, the researcher does not influence the response variable or the experiment's outcome.
There are three types of observational studies – Prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional.
Prospective Study
Prospective studies, also known as longitudinal or cohort studies, are carried out by collecting future data from groups sharing similar characteristics. One example of...

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease II: Emphysema

Emphysema, a major phenotype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is characterized by irreversible destruction of alveolar walls and permanent enlargement of distal airspaces. Unlike chronic bronchitis, which primarily affects the airways, emphysema predominantly involves the lung parenchyma, where structural damage leads to airflow limitation.PathophysiologyIt most commonly results from prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke and other toxic gases, particularly cigarette smoke.
Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs
Central to the success of community-based interventions is the...
Secondary Healthcare System01:11

Secondary Healthcare System

Secondary healthcare is offered by a specialist, generally in hospitals or clinics for patients referred by primary healthcare providers. It occurs when a person has an illness or injury that requires specific medical care. Secondary care is often referred to as acute care. Secondary care can range from uncomplicated care to repair a minor laceration or treat a strep throat infection to more complicated emergent care, such as treating a head injury sustained in an automobile accident. Whatever...
Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II01:18

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results from...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Health Education

Background:

  • The detrimental health effects of smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke are extensively documented.
  • Adolescent smoking remains a significant public health concern, necessitating effective prevention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a school-based smoking prevention program utilizing media models in secondary school adolescents.
  • To assess the impact of celebrity endorsements and engaging educational content on adolescent smoking behaviors.

Main Methods:

  • An anonymous survey was administered to 1382 secondary school students from October 2006 to May 2009.
  • The intervention group received lectures, educational materials, games, and a theatre event focused on smoking hazards and dissuasion.
  • A control group of 568 students did not receive any intervention over the same two-year period.

Main Results:

  • At the end of the two-year program, 4% of the intervention group reported smoking habits compared to 14% in the control group (p = 0.001).
  • Nicotine dependence was reported by 7% of the intervention group versus 27% of the control group (p = 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • A school-based program incorporating media models is effective in preventing smoking habits among secondary school adolescents.
  • The use of relatable figures and engaging content can significantly influence adolescent health behaviors regarding smoking.
