Background:

  • Bladder augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase bladder capacity.

  • Between 1977 and 1989, 129 patients (56 male, 73 female) aged 1-35 years underwent bladder augmentation.
  • 145 bowel segments (cecum, sigmoid, small bowel, stomach, left colon) were used, with 16 patients receiving two segments.
  • Augmentation was part of an undiversion operation in 59 cases.

Findings:

  • The most frequent complication observed was the formation of stones.
  • Detubularized bowel segments facilitated functional bladder reconstruction across a spectrum of urological conditions.
  • Successful reconstruction was achieved in patients previously treated with urinary diversion.
