Atrial septal aneurysms occur in about 1% of children. These aneurysms are often linked with interatrial shunts but do not increase cardiac risk in childhood.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Cardiology
- Echocardiography
- Congenital Heart Defects
Background:
- Limited research exists on atrial septal aneurysm prevalence in children.
- Atrial septal aneurysms are a protrusion or excursion of the interatrial septum.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of atrial septal aneurysms in pediatric patients.
- To identify associated cardiac abnormalities and their incidence.
Main Methods:
- Transthoracic echocardiography was performed on 4522 children over 12 months old.
- Defined atrial septal aneurysm based on protrusion, excursion, and base diameter criteria.
Main Results:
- Atrial septal aneurysms were detected in 1.04% (47 children).
- Most aneurysms were limited to the fossa ovalis (71.11%).
- Associated interatrial shunts (ASD, PFO) were present in 64.44% of cases.
Conclusions:
- The prevalence of atrial septal aneurysms in children is approximately 1%.
- Interatrial shunts, such as patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defects, are common coexisting conditions.
- No increased risk is observed in children with atrial septal aneurysms, suggesting no intervention is needed during childhood.
