Main Methods:

  • A population-based cohort study of 1110 Swedish men aged 70 years was conducted.
  • Dietary habits were assessed using 7-day records, and a Mediterranean Diet Score was calculated.
  • CKD was defined as a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) <60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), and mortality was tracked over a median of 9.9 years.

Main Results:

  • Higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with a significantly lower likelihood of having CKD (42% less likely for high adherents).
  • Among individuals with CKD, greater adherence correlated with lower phosphate intake and net endogenous acid production.
  • Mediterranean diet adherence was linked to a reduced mortality risk in patients with manifest CKD, although not statistically significant in all analyses.

Conclusions:

  • Adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with a reduced prevalence of CKD in elderly men.
  • Greater adherence to this diet independently predicted better survival in individuals with manifest CKD.
  • Clinical trials are recommended to confirm the benefits of the Mediterranean diet for CKD outcomes.
