Background:

  • Chinese herbal medicines have a long history of use as lipid-lowering agents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicines for managing hypertriglyceridaemia.

Main Methods:

  • Searched multiple databases (Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Chinese databases) until May 2012.
  • Included randomized controlled trials comparing Chinese herbal medicines against placebo, no treatment, or other interventions.
  • Assessed risk of bias using standard criteria; data extraction and analysis were performed independently.

Main Results:

  • Three trials with 170 participants were included, all conducted in China and published in Chinese.
  • All trials reported favorable results for serum triglyceride reduction with Chinese herbal medicines, used alone or with gemfibrozil.
  • No significant differences in adverse effects were noted, and no serious adverse events were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Chinese herbal medicines show potential benefits for hypertriglyceridaemia with no reported serious adverse effects.
  • However, conclusions are limited by the unclear risk of bias in the included studies and the absence of long-term, patient-important outcome data.
