Effector-like CD8⁺ T cells in the memory population mediate potent protective immunity

Certain long-lived effector CD8+ T cells provide optimal protection against infection. These cells, despite limited proliferation, effectively control Listeria and vaccinia virus, forming the dominant memory population after re-exposure.
