Summary

This study shows that a five-week advanced pharmacy practice rotation significantly improved student knowledge and confidence in medication therapy management (MTM) for geriatric patients. The rotation enhanced skills in managing chronic diseases and using MTM documentation platforms.

Background:

Advanced pharmacy practice rotations are crucial for developing clinical skills.
Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is essential for optimizing patient outcomes, particularly in geriatric populations.
Assessing the impact of specialized rotations on student competency is vital for curriculum development.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of an advanced pharmacy practice rotation focused on MTM.
To measure changes in student therapeutic knowledge and confidence in MTM.
To assess students' proficiency in utilizing MTM documentation platforms.

Main Methods:

A pretest/post-test quasi-experimental design was employed.
37 advanced pharmacy students participated in a five-week MTM rotation at a licensed pharmacy.
Knowledge and confidence were assessed via pre- and post-tests, alongside a post-rotation survey.

Main Results:

Statistically significant improvements were observed in post-test scores for chronic disease management (osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, COPD) and inappropriate medication use in the elderly.
Student confidence in performing MTM consultations for geriatric patients increased post-rotation.
The rotation positively impacted students' ability to manage medication therapy for complex patient populations.

Conclusions:

A five-week MTM-focused rotation significantly enhances pharmacy students' therapeutic knowledge and practical skills.
The structured curriculum, including topic discussions and daily consultations, effectively improved student competency in geriatric pharmacotherapy and MTM.
This rotation model demonstrates a positive impact on preparing future pharmacists for comprehensive medication management.
