Background:

Effective communication is crucial in general practice consultations.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the occurrence and management of miscommunication in routine general practice consultations.
To analyze specific examples of communication mismatches between general practitioners (GPs) and patients.

Main Methods:

A multi-method case study approach was employed.
Data included video-recorded consultations and post-consultation interviews with GPs and patients.
In-depth interaction analysis techniques were used to examine communication mismatches.

Main Results:

Misunderstandings may not be recognized by either GPs or patients.
Communication mismatches are complex, varying in identification, timing, level, and consequences.
Each instance of miscommunication was unique and distinctive.

Conclusions:

The frequency and complexity of miscommunication necessitate proactive strategies.
