Summary

Combined bleaching technique (CBT) may be preferred for teeth whitening over deep bleaching technique (DBT), offering better shade change and less tooth sensitivity. Both methods provide satisfactory results with similar color rebound.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Cosmetic Dentistry
  • Dental Materials

Background:

  • Tooth discoloration is a common aesthetic concern.
  • Various dental bleaching techniques exist to improve tooth shade.
  • Hydrogen peroxide (HP) based agents are widely used in dental bleaching.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of combined bleaching technique (CBT) and deep bleaching technique (DBT) for tooth whitening.
  • To evaluate tooth shade change, color rebound, and tooth sensitivity associated with CBT and DBT.
  • To determine the optimal bleaching technique for aesthetic dental outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A split-mouth design randomized clinical trial involving 36 volunteers.
  • Objective evaluation of tooth shade using a spectrophotometer and shade guide tabs.

  • Self-evaluation of tooth and gingival sensitivity recorded daily.
  • Main Results:

    • Both CBT and DBT demonstrated satisfactory tooth whitening effects.
    • Deep bleaching technique (DBT) showed a superior shade change compared to CBT.
    • Color rebound was similar between CBT and DBT; CBT exhibited lower tooth sensitivity.

    Conclusions:

    • Combined bleaching technique (CBT) may be preferable for teeth whitening due to potentially better shade change and reduced tooth sensitivity.
    • Both CBT and DBT are clinically safe for lightening stained teeth.
    • Further research may explore long-term efficacy and patient satisfaction with both techniques.
