Summary
Nasopharyngeal endoscopic resection (NER) is a feasible, minimally invasive technique for selected nasopharyngeal tumors (NPTs). This approach shows promising local control rates comparable to traditional methods.
Area of Science:
- Otolaryngology
- Surgical Oncology
- Endoscopic Surgery
Background:
- Nasopharyngeal tumors (NPTs) pose management challenges.
- Minimally invasive surgical techniques are increasingly sought for NPTs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To detail surgical techniques for nasopharyngeal endoscopic resection (NER).
- To evaluate the efficacy of NER for primary and recurrent NPTs.
Main Methods:
- A case series of 36 patients undergoing NER from 1997-2011.
- NER techniques (Types 1, 2, 3) were tailored to tumor extent.
- Follow-up ranged from 2 to 173 months.
Main Results:
- No perioperative mortality or major complications were observed.
- Five-year overall survival was 75.1%, disease-specific survival 80.9%.
- Local control rates were comparable to conventional procedures.
Conclusions:
- Nasopharyngeal endoscopic resection (NER) is a viable, minimally invasive option for select NPTs.
- Preliminary outcomes demonstrate promising local control.
- Further studies with larger cohorts and longer follow-up are warranted.
