Summary

Sickle cell disease patients may experience priapism, a painful erection. Gabapentin effectively treated recurrent priapism in a 16-year-old, offering a new therapeutic option.

Background:

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is prevalent in central India.
Recurrent vaso-occlusive crises are common SCD manifestations.
Priapism, though rare, is a serious SCD complication, potentially causing long-term impotence.

Observation:

A 16-year-old male with SCD presented with recurrent, debilitating priapism.
Standard treatments for priapism were ineffective in this patient.
The patient experienced complete resolution of priapism after initiating Gabapentin therapy.

Findings:

Gabapentin demonstrated significant efficacy in managing recurrent priapism in a young SCD patient.
This case highlights a novel therapeutic approach for a challenging SCD complication.
