Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is significantly more prevalent in Iranian Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients compared to healthy individuals. Age and higher EDSS scores were associated with increased RLS symptoms in MS patients.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Movement Disorders
Background:
- Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological movement disorder.
- Both genetic and lifestyle factors contribute to RLS occurrence.
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological condition affecting the central nervous system.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) in Iranian patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
- To identify potential risk factors associated with RLS in MS patients.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 126 MS patients and 126 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.
- Participants were assessed for RLS symptoms using standardized questionnaires.
- Data collected included demographics, MS characteristics, family history of RLS, anemia history, and medication use.
Main Results:
- RLS prevalence was significantly higher in MS patients (65.1%) compared to controls (12.7%).
- Mean age of MS patients with RLS was higher than those without RLS.
- Higher Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores correlated with increased RLS symptoms in MS patients.
Conclusions:
- RLS should be routinely considered in the neurological assessment of MS patients.
- The findings highlight a significant association between MS and RLS, suggesting further investigation into underlying mechanisms.
