[The use of the nursing process in an acute respiratory disease service]
Insights
Implementing a structured nursing care process in pediatric acute respiratory disease wards facilitated faster infant rehabilitation. This approach proved feasible with available staff, enhancing patient recovery and the nurse-patient relationship, particularly in infants aged 6-9 months.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Nursing
- Respiratory Disease Management
- Healthcare Quality Improvement
Background:
- Optimizing patient recovery and advancing nursing practices are crucial in pediatric care.
- Acute respiratory diseases are a significant cause of hospitalization in infants.
- Evaluating the impact of structured nursing care processes is essential for evidence-based practice.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the behavior and outcomes of applying a nursing care process in a pediatric acute respiratory disease ward.
- To assess the feasibility of implementing this process with existing healthcare staff.
- To evaluate the impact on infant rehabilitation and the nurse-patient relationship.
Main Methods:
- A study involving 37 infants under one year of age hospitalized for acute respiratory diseases.
- Focus on the application and evaluation of a structured nursing care process.
- Data collection on rehabilitation progress and nurse-patient interactions.
Main Results:
- The nursing care process was feasible to implement with the available human resources.
- The application of the nursing care process led to more rapid rehabilitation of infant patients.
- A strong nurse-patient relationship was observed across all studied patients.
Conclusions:
- Structured nursing care processes are effective in accelerating infant recovery from acute respiratory diseases.
- The implementation of such processes is achievable within existing healthcare settings.
- Enhanced nurse-patient relationships are a positive outcome of systematic nursing care delivery.
Abstract:
Due to the value of patient recovery and the development of nursing practices, 37 infants under 1 year of age are studied. These patients had been hospitalized in the Service of Acute Respiratory Diseases in Sur Teaching Children's Hospital in Santiago de Cuba during the months of March-April, 1987. This research work is based in the process of nursing care, and its aimed to determine the behavior and results of its application in a ward with a staff covering the current indicators. It was found that with the human resources available in this service it was feasible to carry out this process, which enabled a more rapid rehabilitation of these patients, according to the care plan carried out. The nurse-patient relationship became apparent in all of the patients studied, with prevalence of the 6-9 month-old age group.
