Atherosclerosis III: Management

Management of atherosclerosis involves an integrated strategy encompassing pharmacological treatment, surgical interventions, lifestyle changes, and nutrition therapy to address the multifactorial nature of the disease.Pharmacological TherapyA cornerstone of atherosclerosis management is the use of pharmacological agents. Statins, such as atorvastatin, are pivotal in inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that catalyzes an initial step in cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This reduction in...

Summary

Referral to Slimming World alongside usual care may help smokers prevent weight gain after quitting. This study investigates if this combined approach is more effective than usual care alone for smoking cessation and weight management.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Behavioral Science
  • Clinical Trials

Background:

  • Weight gain is a common barrier to smoking cessation, potentially increasing type 2 diabetes risk.
  • Dietary interventions during smoking cessation may be counterproductive, increasing cravings and reducing success.
  • Commercial weight management providers offer dietary support, but their effectiveness in preventing cessation-related weight gain is unproven.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if referral to Slimming World from National Health Service (NHS) Stop Smoking Services prevents weight gain after smoking cessation.
  • To compare the effectiveness of usual cessation support plus Slimming World referral versus usual cessation support alone.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing usual cessation support with or without Slimming World referral.
  • Inclusion of healthy weight, overweight, and obese adult smokers attending NHS Stop Smoking Services.
  • Primary outcome: weight change at 12 weeks post-randomization, analyzed using multivariable linear regression.

Main Results:

  • The study is designed to recruit 320 participants (160 per arm).
  • It aims to detect a 2 kg difference in weight gain at 12 weeks with 90% power and 5% alpha error.
  • The analysis will adjust for known predictors of cessation-related weight gain.

Conclusions:

  • This trial will establish the efficacy of the Slimming World program combined with usual care in preventing cessation-related weight gain.
  • If effective, a subsequent trial will assess if weight management compromises smoking cessation success.
  • Positive findings could lead to a national rollout within NHS Stop Smoking Services to support millions of smokers annually.
