Background:

  • Individual differences in sleepiness and alertness are measurable using the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT).
  • Ethanol is known to affect cognitive performance and induce sleepiness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of ethanol on sleepiness and cognitive function in relation to baseline sleep propensity.
  • To determine if individual differences in basal sleepiness influence the effects of ethanol.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-four healthy males were divided into 'sleepy' (MSLT ≤ 6 min) and 'alert' (MSLT ≥ 16 min) groups.
  • Subjects received either ethanol (0.75 mg/kg) or placebo, followed by assessments of sleep latency, divided attention, and subjective sleepiness.
  • Breath ethanol concentration (BEC) was monitored.

Main Results:

  • Ethanol decreased average sleep latency, divided attention scores, and subjective sleepiness ratings (Stanford Sleepiness Scale - SSS).
  • Alert individuals showed longer sleep latencies and better performance post-ethanol compared to sleepy individuals on placebo.
  • Subjective sleepiness and sedation levels were comparable between groups after ethanol administration.

Conclusions:

  • Ethanol's impairing effects on sleep and cognition vary based on an individual's baseline sleep propensity.
  • Alert individuals may be more resilient to the acute effects of moderate ethanol doses compared to habitually sleepy individuals.
