Background:

Social security is a key component of decent work.
No prior epidemiological studies have assessed social security coverage among seafarers.
Seafarers face unique challenges in accessing social protection.

Purpose of the Study:

To address the knowledge gap regarding seafarer social security.
To promote discussion and planning for universal seafarer social security.
To provide evidence for improving social protection in the maritime industry.

Main Methods:

A questionnaire was administered to seafarers.
The survey focused on seafarers' awareness of their social security status.
Data collection involved assessing knowledge of social security provisions.

Main Results:

Significant disparities in social security coverage were observed across nationalities.
Over half of seafarers surveyed believe they lack economic coverage for onboard injuries leading to disability.
A substantial number of respondents feel unprotected against work-related diseases.

Conclusions:

Findings align with International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 143 regarding seafarers from countries with limited social security.
Recommended solutions include implementing ILO 2006 Convention minimum standards.
Long-term goals involve surveying implementation and striving for global social equality for seafarers.
