Summary

Purpose of the Study:

  • Twenty-two male subjects were randomly assigned to either a Sitting Control or HDBR group.
  • Subjects viewed 75 International Affective Picture System (IAPS) slides (pleasant, neutral, unpleasant).
  • Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded from F7, F8, and Pz locations during the task.

  • Sitting Controls exhibited expected greater P300 and Late Positive Potential (LPP) for emotional vs. neutral stimuli.

Conclusions:

  • HDBR significantly inhibits cortical emotional responses, indicated by reduced ERP components.
  • This inhibition may increase risks for astronauts underestimating threats and for bedridden patients developing depression.
  • Further research is needed to understand the long-term implications of HDBR on emotional processing and mental health.
