Summary

The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) overestimates vigorous physical activity (PA) and underestimates sedentary time compared to accelerometer data. These discrepancies in PA assessment varied by sex, age, and education level.

    • Participants reported 131 min/day less sedentary time than measured by accelerometer.
    • Differences in sedentary time and vigorous PA were most pronounced in older men and those with lower education.
    • Men reported 47% more MVPA than women, but accelerometer data showed no sex difference in MVPA.

    Conclusions:

    • The IPAQ-Short Form overestimates vigorous PA and underestimates sedentary time compared to accelerometer measurements.
    • Discrepancies between self-reported and measured MVPA increase with higher activity and intensity levels.
    • The agreement between IPAQ and accelerometer data is influenced by sex, age, and education, but not BMI.
