Newman Projections02:06

Newman Projections

Different notations are used to represent the three-dimensional structure of molecules on two-dimensional surfaces. One of the most commonly used representations is the dash-wedge formula. The dashed wedges, solid wedges, and the plane lines indicate the groups situated behind the plane, coming out of the plane, and in the plane, respectively.
The organic molecules rotate across the single bonds leading to numerous temporary three-dimensional structures of varying energy known as conformers.
Assembly of Complex Microtubule Structures01:32

Assembly of Complex Microtubule Structures

Complex microtubule structures are present in resting cells and in dividing cells. In resting cells, they are responsible for maintaining the cellular architecture, tracks for intracellular transport, positioning of organelles, assembly of cilia and flagella. They mediate the bipolar spindle assembly for chromosomal segregation and positioning of the cell division plate in dividing cells. The formation of microtubule complex structures depends on the cell type, cell stage, and cell function.

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes

Tetrahedral Complexes
Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...
Ionic Crystal Structures02:42

Ionic Crystal Structures

Ionic crystals consist of two or more different kinds of ions that usually have different sizes. The packing of these ions into a crystal structure is more complex than the packing of metal atoms that are the same size.
Most monatomic ions behave as charged spheres, and their attraction for ions of opposite charge is the same in every direction. Consequently, stable structures for ionic compounds result (1) when ions of one charge are surrounded by as many ions as possible of the opposite...
Multi-pass Transmembrane Proteins and β-barrels01:09

Multi-pass Transmembrane Proteins and β-barrels

In multi-pass transmembrane proteins, the polypeptide chain crosses the membrane more than once. The transmembrane polypeptide chain either forms an α-helix or β-strand structure. α-Helix containing multi-pass transmembrane proteins are ubiquitous, whereas β-strand containing ones are mainly found in gram-negative bacteria, mitochondria, and chloroplasts.

Area of Science:

  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Materials Science
  • Crystallography

Background:

  • Polyoxometalates (POMs) are versatile anionic clusters with diverse structures and applications.
  • Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and coordination polymers offer tunable porous structures.
  • Hybrid materials combining POMs and metal ions can exhibit unique properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize and characterize novel hybrid compounds incorporating POMs and silver ions.
  • To investigate the formation of 3D frameworks with helical channels.
  • To explore the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized compounds.

Main Methods:

  • Hydrothermal synthesis for compound preparation.
  • Single-crystal X-ray diffraction for structural elucidation.
  • Photocatalytic degradation experiments using Rhodamine B (RhB).

Main Results:

  • Two isostructural hybrid compounds, K[Ag14(pyttz)4(H2O)2][PW12O40]2⋅(OH)⋅5 H2O (1) and K[Ag14(pyttz)4(H2O)4][HSiW12O40]2⋅H2O (2), were synthesized.
  • These compounds feature 3D polyoxometalate-silver (POM-Ag) frameworks with unprecedented tetragonal and dodecagonal helical channels.
  • Left- and right-handed helical chains formed by POMs lead to the unique channel structures.
  • Initial investigations suggest photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B.
