Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • Posttraumatic lower leg deformities present significant challenges in correction.
  • Traditional methods may have limitations in addressing complex or multiplanar deformities.
  • The Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF) offers a computer-assisted approach for gradual deformity correction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of the Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF) for correcting posttraumatic lower leg deformities.
  • To assess the outcomes of percutaneous osteotomy, external fixation, and computer-assisted gradual correction using the TSF.
  • To determine the functional recovery and complication rates associated with TSF treatment.

Main Methods:

  • The study involved 6 cases of posttraumatic lower leg deformities.

  • Percutaneous osteotomy and hybrid fixation with the TSF were employed.
  • Computer-assisted planning and gradual correction were performed using the TSF's hexapod platform.
  • Main Results:

    • The TSF achieved precise correction of frontal (mean 15°) and sagittal (mean 6°) plane deformities.
    • Correction time averaged 19 days, with minimal deviation from planned correction.
    • Five cases achieved osseous consolidation within the TSF (mean 112 days external fixation); one case utilized an intramedullary nail.
    • Pin site infections occurred in 3 cases, with no other complications reported.
    • All patients achieved full functional recovery, walking without aids and pain at 1-year follow-up.

    Conclusions:

    • The Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF) is a viable and effective method for correcting complex posttraumatic lower leg deformities.
    • Computer-assisted gradual correction with the TSF leads to excellent functional outcomes and patient satisfaction.
    • The TSF allows for precise deformity correction and facilitates bone consolidation, with manageable complication rates.
