Summary

Most family planning agencies do not offer same-day insertion for long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), despite guidelines. This creates barriers for women seeking convenient, long-term birth control methods.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Family Planning
  • Contraception Access

Background:

  • Limited understanding exists regarding clinician attitudes towards same-day long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) insertions.
  • The practical application of recommendations for same-day LARC provision remains largely unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate clinician attitudes and practices concerning same-day LARC insertions.
  • To identify barriers to the implementation of LARC guidelines in family planning agencies.

Main Methods:

  • 47 family planning agencies in Colorado and Iowa participated in initiatives to increase LARC provision.
  • Clinic directors (n=45) and clinicians (n=114) were interviewed and surveyed about LARC practices and attitudes.

Main Results:

  • Fewer visits were required for contraceptive implant insertion compared to intrauterine devices (IUDs).
  • Only 18% of agencies typically offered IUDs, and 36% offered implants in a single visit.
  • Clinician experience and professional title influenced attitudes regarding the number of visits needed for LARC.

Conclusions:

  • Barriers hinder the full implementation of LARC guidelines.
  • Addressing these barriers is crucial for enabling women to access their chosen LARC methods without multiple visits.
