Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Procedures
  • Nutritional Support

Context:

  • Enteral feeding is crucial for malnourished patients with functional gastrointestinal tracts.
  • Surgical gastrostomy, while effective, carries significant risks.
  • Percutaneous methods for gastrostomy tube placement have emerged as alternatives.

Purpose:

  • To describe the experience with percutaneous gastrostomy.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of this procedure.
  • To discuss potential challenges and complications.

Summary:

  • Over 30 percutaneous gastrostomies were performed.
  • The procedure resulted in one major morbidity.
  • No procedure-related mortalities were observed.

Impact:

  • Percutaneous gastrostomy presents a potentially safer option for nutritional management.
  • This technique may reduce the risks associated with traditional surgical gastrostomy.
  • Further evaluation of potential problems is warranted.
