Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters between adult male smokers and non-smokers.
  • To identify specific ECG changes associated with cigarette consumption.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 88 healthy males (18-30 years), divided into 44 smokers and 44 non-smokers.
  • Recorded ECGs after 2-hour abstinence from smoking and caffeine.
  • Assessed heart rate, P-wave, PR interval, QRS complex, QT interval, corrected QT (QTc), ST segment, and T wave duration.

Main Results:

  • Smokers exhibited a statistically significant increase in heart rate.
  • Smokers showed a significant shortening of RR interval, QT interval, and ST segment compared to non-smokers.
  • While QTc interval was shortened and QRS complex widened in smokers, these changes lacked statistical significance.

Conclusions:

  • ECG alterations in smokers reflect acute or chronic effects of smoking on the cardiovascular system.
  • ECG findings can serve as a tool for physicians to counsel smokers on cessation.
  • Early smoking cessation is crucial for mitigating smoking-induced cardiovascular disorders.
