Summary

Maternal serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were measured in women with preterm labor and no infection. Results showed no significant difference in IL-6 levels between preterm labor patients and healthy controls.

Background:

Preterm labor is a significant concern in perinatal medicine.
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a cytokine implicated in inflammatory processes.
The role of IL-6 in preterm labor without infection requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To measure serum IL-6 levels in pregnant women experiencing preterm labor without clinical or biochemical signs of infection.
To compare IL-6 levels between women in preterm labor and a healthy control group.

Main Methods:

A case-control study was conducted with 22 pregnant women diagnosed with preterm labor and 22 healthy pregnant women matched for gestational age.
Maternal serum samples were collected to measure IL-6 concentrations.

Gestational age ranged from 24 weeks and 4 days to 34 weeks and 6 days.

Main Results:

Fifty percent (11 out of 22) of women in the preterm labor group experienced preterm birth.
No statistically significant difference was observed in maternal serum IL-6 levels between the preterm labor group and the healthy control group.
IL-6 levels did not appear to be elevated in cases of preterm labor uncomplicated by infection.

Conclusions:

This study suggests that elevated serum IL-6 levels are not a characteristic feature of preterm labor in the absence of infection.
Further research may be needed to explore other inflammatory markers or mechanisms involved in non-infectious preterm labor.
